englisch articel about ilam arabic world...ext - بسام الخوري - 04-22-2008 Ayoon wa Azan (Islam and the West -Part 3) Jihad el-Khazen Al-Hayat - 21/04/08// Every religion has traditions of tolerance and prejudice. I followed the efforts of Christian, Jewish and Muslim experts who met in Los Angeles to add context to passages that have been perceived as hostile toward other religions (Los Angeles Times, 2 October 2007). The Koran says: "In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are not of well-established meaning. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is not of well-established meaning … (Surah 3, Al Imran, verse 7). The fourth Orthodox Caliph Ali said that the Koran carries many interpretations. It is unfortunate that in the case of verses of no well-established meaning, the most restrictive, or narrow, interpretation is almost always adopted. I was speaking to a member of the World Economic Forum's C-100 initiative on promoting dialogue between Islam and the West about the existence of more than one meaning for a single word. He said that was the case in all religions, and told me a Jewish joke: Abe went to see his rabbi. "Rabbi," he said, "I would be grateful if you could explain the Talmud to me." "Very well, Abe," said the rabbi. "First, I need to ask you a simple question. If two men climb inside a chimney and one comes out dirty and the other comes out clean, which one washes himself?" "The dirty one," replied Abe. "No, Abe. They look at each other. The dirty man thinks he is clean but the clean man thinks he is dirty and washes." "Now another question," said the rabbi. "If two men climb inside a chimney and one comes out dirty and the other comes out clean, which one washes himself?" Abe smiled, "You just told me that one, Rabbi. The clean man, because he thinks he is dirty." "No, Abe," said the rabbi. "They each look at themselves. The clean man knows he doesn't have to wash and the dirty man washes himself." "Now one final question," said the rabbi. "If two men climb inside a chimney and one comes out dirty and the other one comes out clean, which one washes himself?" This time Abe frowned, "I don't know, Rabbi. It could be either one, depending on your point of view." "No, Abe," said the rabbi. "If two men climb inside a chimney, how could either of them come out clean? They are obviously both dirty and so they both wash." Abe was now thoroughly confused, "Rabbi, you asked me exactly the same question three times, yet you gave me three different answers. Are you playing games with me?" "No, Abe, I would never joke with you. This is Talmud." When I was at Georgetown University, my friend and professor Hisham Sharabi asked me to write a paper showing that Islam gave women their rights. I tried, but found in the end that women were not made equal to men in the Koran. There is the well-known verse, "Men are protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other…" (Surah 4, Al Nisa, verse 34) There are some verses that clearly show men are superior, while others make it appear as if there is equality between the sexes: · "And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of advantage) over them." (Surah 2, Al Baqarah, verse 228) · "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he a male or female…" · " And in nowise covet those things in which Allah hath bestowed His gifts more freely on some of you than others: to men is allotted what they earn, and to women what they earn ..." (Surah 4, Al Nisa, verse 32) · "The believers, men and women, are protectors, on of another…" (Surah 9, Al Tawbah, verse 71). · "…He that works a righteous deed - weather man or woman - and is a believer - such will enter The Garden (of bliss)…" (Surah 40, Ghafir, verse 40). Islam did not make women equal to men. That paper in Georgetown produced an unexpected result, something new to me and to Professor Sharabi at least. In the New Testament, the role of the Virgin Mary is very limited. After delivering Jesus, she all but disappears. As she was married to Joseph, the Gospel according to Mark tells us that she gave Jesus half brothers: "Is not this the carpenter, son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" (6:3) Mathew simply refers to "Jesus and his brothers." In the Koran, Mary has a whole sura, or chapter, named after her, and she is mentioned in other suras, by name or as in Issa (Jesus) and his mother. The Koran has her speaking to Archangel Gabriel who in Islamic traditions speaks only to prophets. As a result, Andalusian ulema, like Ibn Hazm, considered her a prophet. (To be continued) englisch articel about ilam arabic world...ext - بسام الخوري - 04-22-2008 Ayoon Wa Azan (Islam and the West - 2) Jihad el-Khazen Al-Hayat - 21/04/08// A Muslim does not have to be paranoid to think that people are out to get him. There are many enemies of Islam and Muslims, but the most dangerous of them all are the terrorists claiming to be Muslims, such as Al-Qaeda and its offshoots operating in the region stretching from Iraq to the Arab Maghreb and in every country. They are killing Muslims, facilitating the deeds of the enemies of Muslims, and stirring repulsion among the majority of people seeking a peaceful life around the world. Muslims have a far greater need to defeat the terror that emerged from their ranks more than the US or any other international alliance do. Before this surge of terror, coexistence among faiths prevailed. But now I need to refer to the example of the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams who suggested in a lecture that the British Legal System should allow Islamic courts to decide some matters of family law relevant to their communities. He immediately faced a firestorm of protest concentrating on Sharia, and ignoring the fact that he also mentioned Orthodox Jewish law. In addition to the calls to dismiss him from his post, the Archbishop spent days later trying to explain himself. The biggest file in my office is about the almost daily news and reports that attack Islam and Muslims, a phenomenon I have not seen in my forty-year-career in journalism. While most of this is deliberate and its offensive content intentional, I hope that we deal with the issue professionally and meticulously. In today's West, there is what I call "the fashion" of denying God's existence. In this connection, saleable books have been published and atheist writers have been interviewed on TV. Even the BBC TV aired a session in which doubt was cast on the crucifixion of Jesus, the basis of Christian faith. I have recently read about a pornographic film on Jesus that was produced twenty years ago but was not released; however, the abolition of the blasphemy law in Britain made its distribution possible. If this perpetrated against Christianity, then the flow of daily assaults on Islam should not be surprising, and it is a daily business indeed. I am keeping copies of texts to research this issue later. The accusations are false, built on expressions of Islamofascism, the Islamic Gestapo, and all similar manifestations of Islam as scary and repulsive. I personally wish we did not reply to any attack because the only result of such a reply is granting publicity to the other party. I believe that Satanic Verses would not have been read by two thousand intellectuals had it not been for the counter-campaign that turned it into a bestseller. The same applies to the caricatures offending the Prophet. Had we ignored them they would have died in their cradle, and so would the case have been with the film produced by MP Wilders. I believe that my reply to it will have a decisive effect regarding the issue, provided the readers are patient. In my opinion, had it not been for terror, Geert Wilders and the caricaturists offending the Prophet would not have dared to attack Islam. Yet, many positive points must be kept in the minds of interested readers. I have just returned from a conference held in London on "Islamic Communities in Europe". Early last month the Vatican set plans to hold a Catholic-Muslim Forum next November. Muslims and Anglicans will hold a conference in Britain next October. Yale University in America will organize a global conference for the three monotheistic religions next July. Georgetown University will host a similar conference in March 2009. This month it organized, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, a seminar on Islam and the West in the Congress. Jordan plans to host a conference in April 2009 for Muslims and Christians at the traditional site where Jesus was supposedly baptized in the Jordan River. Finally, many Muslim countries hold annual contests about for memorizing the Koran, mostly at the pre-teen or teenage levels. Although they can memorize it, they are unable to understand it. I would rather see contests for understanding the Koran. Children can learn less but must understand more such that by the time they have matured, they realize that their faith is about moderation and peace and to prevent them from falling victims to extremists. McCain endorses the war on Iraq and every other war, while Obama opposes all wars. Clinton, in turn, stands in between. As a matter of fact, the Republican candidate has gone back on his most rigid stances even though he still supports the war in Iraq and the troops surge, firmly rejecting any withdrawal. For her part, Clinton affirms she is the only candidate who will withdraw the American forces from Iraq, six months after taking office, whereas Obama insists he is the only candidate who has always opposed the war. In fact, there is some truth in the words of the three contenders. When McCain distances himself from George Bush, his opposition is restricted to the war management and has nothing to do with the war itself or with a potential war on Iran. When Clinton objects to the war, she does not apologize for her 2002 vote authorizing the war. Nor does she apologize for last year's vote dubbing the Iranian Republican Guard a terrorist organization, thereby authorizing the Bush administration to wage war against Iran. As for Obama, he was not a Senator when the Iraq war was voted in. But, to his credit, he voted twice against financing the American forces in Iraq then later ignored the decision regarding the Iranian Republican Guard. He did not vote against it; he rather absented himself from the session. Frankly speaking, what matters to me - as far as the US presidential candidates are concerned - is foreign policy, and particularly the stance on the Middle East. This means backing Israel with financial resources, arms and the veto power, enabling it to pursue its occupation of Palestinian territories and to keep killing Palestinians. In my own judgment, John McCain is the worst contender of the three. His administration will be an extension of Bush's. He is now surrounded by symbols from the war cabal. Having prominently embroiled the Bush administration in the war on Iraq, these symbols are now focusing on Iran and the alleged threat it poses. The only competition comes from the closest men to him in this war cabal. Hillary Clinton is better than McCain and has a good understanding of the Middle East. If elected, she will resume the policy pursued by her husband Bill Clinton in the region. As a matter of fact, the year 2001 was about to end with the conclusion of peace between the Palestinians and Israel and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The responsibility for the failure must be shouldered by everybody; the bulk rests with the war criminal Ariel Sharon - then Bill Clinton and Yasser Arafat but to a lesser extent. Despite these policy disparities, the three contenders voice their support for Israel whether solicited or not. This is an inevitable stance to be taken by any candidate if he does not wish to antagonize "Israel's dogs" who are numerous, particularly in Washington DC. Obama is no exception to the rule. He seizes every opportunity to declare his full endorsement of Israel. He once said that nobody was suffering more than the Palestinian people. But when held accountable for this remark as a presidential candidate, he said the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip were suffering because of their leadership. Of course, he did not mean this. But Jewish leaders accepted his interpretation to save the faces of both parties. The truth is that Obama is a Black and, as such, sympathizes with the Palestinians even if he no longer declares it. I experienced it myself when I lived in Washington and I felt it when I met members of both houses of Congress. Two days ago, I learnt from the "Los Angeles Times" that Obama was, during his residence time in Illinois, a friend of Dr. Rashid Khalidi and repeatedly had dinner at his home. He also attended a farewell party organized by the Palestinian community in the city upon Khalidi's move to Columbia University in New York. Obama is seeing Rashid Al-Khalidi very fleetingly these days, and he no longer consults with him. However, I am confident that if elected president, he will surround himself with advisors away from the Israel lobby that gives precedence to Israel's interests over America's. We are not asking anyone to stand by us; we rather want the Americans to stand by their country because we could have common interests with them had it not been for the Israeli dagger! A large number of Israel's supporters doubt Obama's declared positions, hence the ongoing campaign by Israeli media. Every day, we read articles like the one headlined "Is Obama a Muslim?" Such articles ask whether he was once a Muslim and offer "information" on his study of the Koran in Arabic, let alone other "accusations" to scare the average voters in a country where they hear daily of "Islamofascism" to the extent a genuine "Islamophobia" has developed, one that will not disappear before years. I am writing as a Middle Eastern citizen. I hope that either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama will be elected to the American presidency. englisch articel about ilam arabic world...ext - بسام الخوري - 04-22-2008 ) Jihad el Khazen Al Hayat - 19/04/08// Islam and the West: Part One I greatly hesitated to write about Islam and Muslims in this newspaper of ours. On one hand, I feel like I am preaching to the choir, as every Muslim knows his faith. On the other hand, it is a sensitive matter to discuss religious topics, as any discussion must have opposition. However, the subject is of great importance and very much a topic of debate, and there must be a reasonable, calm response, which I hope I can provide. Before I begin, I should clarify that I do not ask the reader to abide by what I say. I would advise him to abide by the teachings of Sheikh Al-Azhar or of the mufti of his own country. I add that I believe in one and only one God and that "Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything less", so if I were wrong He would forgive me. There is also a Hadith said by the two Sheiks: "He who believed in Me and Me alone will enter Paradise…" Hence my seat in paradise is guaranteed, along with forgiveness. I beg Arab and Muslim readers to bear with me, for I will be writing in episodes, the first of which will be a general introduction, which Muslims already know. Yet this column, and most of the newspaper's material, is translated into English. Thus the first episode paves the way for the one that follows, in which I begin to reply to Dutch Member of Parliament Geert Wilders and other extremists. The reply will include a comparison between Islam and Judaism, within ethical limits, of course. The worst thing we can do to defend Islam is to insult another monotheistic religion. I think the comparison will be accurate. Some of it will surprise the reader, however knowledgeable he may be. I have worked in the field of interfaith dialogue between Islam and the West for three decades. However, the current study reflects an effort of six months, during which I used every spare minute I had to read, compare and ask experts. Before seeing the silly video which Wilders produced, I had been shocked by one of his articles, entitled "I don't hate Muslims, I hate Islam". I have always thought, as I still do, that Islam is better than Muslims. Words may be used and abused and yet remain true. Islam is a religion of peace and moderation. There is, however, an extreme minority that has hijacked the faith, while the vast majority of Muslims remain silent, unconcerned, or in a state of denial. Terrorist organizations of the likes of Al Qaeda are transgressing well established verses. The Holy Quran says: "Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah hath been to you most Merciful!" which, according to my understanding, forbids suicide bombings. It also says: "If a man kills a Believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (forever): and the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him." Thus, God forbids killing the soul and killing believers. Yet, day after day, we see Al-Qaeda suicide bombers killing Muslims in Iraq. The Holy Quran advises with regard to non-Muslims and says: "If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the Word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge." It has always called for leniency, both in words and in actions: "Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds; but speak to him mildly…" "Let there be no compulsion in religion…" "Let him who will, believe, and let him who will, reject…" "Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee…" "If thy Lord had so willed, He could have made mankind one people…" I have tried in this study to rely only on the Holy Quran to avoid debate. I have not used any other reference except within the narrowest of scopes, and where there is no conflict. In the commandments of the Prophet to his armies, and in those of his successor, the first Caliph Abu Bakr, we read: "Keep your word. Don't kill women, children or old men. Leave monks in monasteries to their dedication. Don't cut trees. Don't kill animals except to eat". The terrorists in Iraq have killed a priest and transgressed the commandments of the Prophet and of his first Caliph. These commandments came at a time when Islam was struggling for survival in the wars of Ridda (apostasy). Had the Muslims lost the battle then, there would be no Islam today. Muslims today number about 1.2 billion and their existence is in no way endangered, so as to justify the killing of others. To be continued tomorrow englisch articel about ilam arabic world...ext - بسام الخوري - 04-23-2008 Ayoon wa Azan (Islam and the West - 4) Jihad el Khazen Al Hayat - 22/04/08// I admit I have not watched the "Fitna" movie till the end. I found it to be very silly and boring, in spite of being very short. MP Geert Wilders used verses from Surah Al Nisa about torturing those who did not believe in God's verses (and the Hadith about the Otherworld) and killing polytheists; from Surah Mohamed about beheading the unbelievers; from Surah Al Anfal, like "And fight them until there is no more disbelief and polytheism," and "And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war to threaten the enemy of Allâh and your enemy." I have the utmost respect for Judaism and I refer to its verses to condemn Geert Wilders. He is an extremist fool, and the verses he used are nothing compared to what has been mentioned in the Torah. For example: "Listen now to the message from the Lord. This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys." (1 Samuel 15, verses 1-4) Also: "The Lord said to Moses, "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people." So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the Lord's vengeance on them. Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel." […] They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man. Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba-the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses (Numbers 31, verses 1-8) The laws of Islam and Judaism are similar and at times identical, both in the Koran and the Old Testament, and also in Sharia and Talmud. Tithe is like Zakat. Kosher is the equivalent of Halal. Minyan is a quorum of ten men required for a Jewish prayer and is similar to the prayer of "Jama'a" for Muslims. While Muslims are required to pray five times a day, Orthodox Jews pray three to four times a day, a practice called Shema Yisrael. Their women cover their hair after marriage, and a few are seen in a veil, or even niqab. In the five Books of Moses, Leviticus presents the laws in detail and Deuteronomy is a late edition of the law, probably written about 500 BC. It includes laws from Deuteronomy chapters 12-26. I will choose some of them tomorrow. هذا ما عندي عن الموضوع، وأرجو ألا أكون أثقلت على القارئ، فقد حاولت جهدي، والمادة التي استعملتها للمقارنة تبلغ أضعاف المنشور هنا، وكل من يريد معلومات أوفى يستطيع أن يتصل بي في «الحياة«. englisch articel about ilam arabic world...ext - بسام الخوري - 04-27-2008 EGYPT: A birthday protest for the president? Cyber-dissidents and Facebook activists are preparing to give Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak a birthday present that is certain to spoil the cake and candles mood. On May 4, when the leader turns 80, opposition groups have called for a national strike to protest low wages, inflation, poverty and political oppression that have led to growing anger against Mubarak. The dissidents have the Internet, but Mubarak controls the intelligence and security forces. It’s being couched as a battle between technology, and tear gas and batons. A national strike several weeks ago turned out to be more symbolic than successful. Police shut down most protests before they started and many in this nation, where more than 40% of the population lives on less than $2 a day, couldn’t afford to give up a day of work to punch their fists in the air. But activists were inspired, rallying around Esra Abdel Fattah, a 27-year-old blogger who was arrested earlier this month while plotting a protest movement on a Facebook network that included an estimated 64,000 members. She was released from prison earlier this week. The question for the Egyptian opposition, however, is can electronic dissidence lead to placards and marchers in the street? Historically, Egyptians are not known for taking on their leaders in massive public protests, and the Mubarak government is moving swiftly to silence bloggers, satellite TV channels and other contrarian voices. Bush Israel and the United States needed to be "steadfast in the face of those who would murder the innocent" in pursuit of their goals, U.S. President George W Bush said in an address before the "Facing Tomorrow" presidential conference Wednesday night. Addressing an international conference in Jerusalem, he said Israel and the United States shared a "powerful" belief "to advance the cause of hope, freedom and liberty, as the great alternative to tyranny and terror." The U.S., he said, was "Israel's oldest and best friend in the world" and the bonds between the two countries grew stronger "with every passing year." Advertisement Closing his brief remarks at the Jerusalem Convention Center, Bush said he looked forward to the day when "every child in the Middle East will live in peace." "We know that day will come, and when it does, the U.S. will be at your [Israel's] side," he said. Bush did not mention in his speech the current Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which resumed under his auspices at the turn of the year. But he has scheduled meetings with Israeli leaders during his visit, and is set hold talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh on Saturday and Sunday. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who spoke immediately before the U.S. president, thanked President Shimon Peres, who is hosting the international event, and said "your ardent dedication to Israel... is unmatched. Thank you Mr. president for everything." The prime minister also lavished praise on U.S. President George W. Bush, who spoke directly after him, saying "he is a great leader, a great friend, a source of inspiration and we are very proud that we can celebrate the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel with you and your wife here in our eternal capital, Jerusalem." "Our core beliefs, our founding values and our aspirations are all drawn from the same inspirations. With full confidence I say that the U.S. under your leadership represents the pinnacle of this friendship," he added. Peres, who spoke before Olmert, opened his address with praise Bush, whom he credits for "mov[ing] us with your friendship and resolve to stop terror in the region and offer[ing] peace to its inhabitants." "Without the support of your people and without your support and that of the American presidents before you, attaining [independence] would have been an extremely difficult task," Peres said. Peres praised Bush's predecessors in office, including his father for agreeing to Israel's request to aid the airlift of Jews from Sudan in what became known as "Operation Moses." "You encouraged us when we were alone to establish a real democracy, to develop a modern economy," Peres said. "We built an army that sought victory and a people that sought peace." The president said history would like kindly upon Bush's policies in the region. "It will be heard when history depicts your courage and decisiveness while addressing challenges that faced the U.S.A. and in fact the entire world," Peres said. "You taught the world that it is possible to be powerful without being power hungry," Peres said. "For us, this is a thanksgiving party to a tremendous nation, for the leadership of President George Walker Bush - never short of faith, never postponing a choice, always in the service of the great American tradition. http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/983451.html |
