After reading a note about successful management, I thought that this was something I missed at work, a successful manager ...
A successful manager could mean to many "a manager who brings the company lots and lots of money, and saves lots and lots of costs" which does make sense, as all companies seek this as an ultimate goal, or let's say final result at the end of each fiscal year ....
But, what lays behind is much more complex and important and has far more effects on the long run than just making a good financial year ...
I had a conversation with one of our top managers a few months ago, and as I've been frank with him to say "change or wither" he had the answer ready for me and said "we can't change, we have a fixed mindset and cannot accept change", and as disappointing that was for me to hear such answer coming from someone a respect I asked myself a question that should be also directed to him as well, which is "what the hell are you still doing here then????"
In short, if you want to be a "bad" manager, it is not a hard job by the way:
1- Treat your employees as if you are dealing with 1st graders
2- Never try to put the "right" person in the "right" place, ever!!!!
3- "Empower"??? what does that mean???
4- "Motivate"???? what the hell are you talking about???
5- If something goes wrong, there is nothing easier than saying "he did it"!!! as if we are 5 years old, he/she won't say anyting mostly, because you're paying their salary...
6- Micro Manage, stick your nose in everything, don't let them do anything without your knowledge and approval
7- Decision making is your magic wand, don't let anyone get even close to it ... it's yours exclusively, and others must not touch it ... don't let them take decisions, and if they do, just go against them at all cost...
8- Is he/she happy??? Sad??? Frustrated??? ... what does it have to do with me???
9- He/she does something good, it's his/her job .... he/she does something bad, he/she is doomed!!!!! ... "Thank You" is not part of the vocabulary ...
10- Leadership is something difficult, but hey!!! you don't have to even think about it ...
This is what I'm going through on a daily basis, and much more, and I pray for each and everyone of you not to have to go through a similar experience because it is not pleasant at all .... but the upside is that I really hope that this will be a lesson for me in the future should I be put in a position to lead people.
