Kenneth Pinyan (June 22, 1960 - July 2, 2005) was Gig Harbor,Washington resident who engaged in receptive anal sex with
full-size stallions at a farm near the city of Enumclaw. He videotaped those sex acts and distributed them informally under the name Mr. Hands.

During a July 2005 sex act, which was being videotaped by a friend of his, he suffered a perforated colon, and later died of his injuries. The story was reported in the The Seattle Times and was one of that paper's most read stories of 2005.

Pinyan's death prompted the passing of a bill in Washington State prohibiting both sex with animals, and the videotaping of the same, some months later. However, the video seen by many others was before the accident.

A documentary of the life and death of Pinyan, and the life led by those who came to the farm near Enumclaw as he did, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival 2007 under the title Zoo. It was one of 16 winners out of 856 candidates for the festival, and played at numerous regional festivals in the USA thereafter.Following Sundance, it was also selected as one of the top five American films to be presented at the prestigious Directors Fortnight sidebar at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival

The media outlets that reported the story withheld Pinyan's name. His name was revealed on national radio by talk show host Tom Leykis in the summer of 2005.

Prosecutors later determined that the horse, an Arabian stallion, which had apparently engaged regularly in penetrative sex acts of this kind, had not been injured by being allowed to engage in sex in this manner. The photographer, 54-year old James Michael Tait of Enumclaw, was later charged with trespassing, since this act took place on a third party's property. A third man alleged to have been present was not charged as his identity was not proven by evidence. According to the Medical Examiner's Office, Pinyan "died of acute peritonitis due to perforation of the colon", and the death was ruled accidental. A further source states that the stallion was owned by Pinyan, who merely boarded it at the property concerned

Other factors surrounding the death were apparently that the deceased, concerned about appearing in hospital with an unusual internal injury and the effect on his security clearance as an engineer for aerospace company Boeing, had apparently refused his friends' urging to go to the hospital for several hours after being aware he was internally injured, and was either beyond treatment or dead when he finally reached the ER.

Media reports at the time of the trial suggested that despite seizing and examining carefully a large number of such videos from the property, no evidence of injury to the horses was found, precluding animal cruelty charges, and that the trespass charge against Tait were brought due to lack of grounds for any other matter:

It was only after Pinyan died, when law enforcement looked for one way to punish his associates, that the legality of bestiality in Washington State became an issue [...] The prosecutor's office wanted to charge Tait with animal abuse, but the police found no evidence of abused animals on the many videotapes they collected from his home. As there was no law against humanely fucking one horse, the prosecutors could only charge Tait with trespassing.

The prosecutor's office says no animal cruelty charges were filed because there was no evidence of injury to the horses.

Film to focus on aftermath of Enumclaw incident

Director hoping to look at bigger picture, shed light on culture

The city of Enumclaw popped up on the national media radar in July 2005, courtesy of a bizarre incident in which a Gig Harbor man died after sexual relations with a horse at a nearby stable.

The incident spurred a stampede of media attention on the city, including a national magazine article.

Now the incident, which resulted in the death of a middle-aged Boeing engineer from acute peritonitis after his colon was perforated during intercourse with a horse, will be heading to the silver screen. A movie is now in production by Seattle independent film director Robinson Devor.

Devor said the documentary, “In The Forest There is Every Kind of Bird,” is not just about the incident.

“Its covers everything from the cultural influence of the incident to the rescue of the horses involved to the humanizing of the deceased,” he said by e-mail. “In general, though, the public mockery, hatred and humiliation seemed too one-sided. We felt that some of the people involved in the incident never had the opportunity to tell their side of the story.

“There will be no sensational or sordid re-enactments,” he added. “Some people will play themselves, some will only be heard and not seen.”

Co-writer Charles Mudede said the movie will take a deeper look at the incident's aftermath.

Mudede - a journalist for The Stranger, a weekly newspaper in Seattle that extensively covered the case - said his interest and the film's focus is aimed more at the response, which included local legislator Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, sponsoring and passing a bill outlawing bestiality in Washington state.

Prior to the incident bestiality was not illegal.

“The Enumclaw police didn't have anyplace to turn, they couldn't charge anyone because it wasn't illegal,” Mudede said.

The only charges filed in the case were against James Michael Tait, an Enumclaw man who pled guilty to trespassing after it was discovered he was present and videotaping during the incident. Tait received a one-year suspended sentence, a $300 fine, and was ordered to perform eight hours of community service.

“It's interesting to us because it's a cultural area,” Mudede said. “The death changed the culture of the state. The senators came in and changed the law. The real interest is when do we make the law? It takes something as bizarre as horse sex to produce and reveal the process of the law and how we as people make laws.

“We always see laws there when we're born,” he continued. “They're already there and we accept them. We can't have sex with someone under the age 16. And we accept that. That's the law. This is a chance to see the moment, see who's gathered here at this site of crisis.”

Geographically, Mudede said the film will not be photographed in Enumclaw and will instead focus on the Internet bestiality community that was revealed after the case.

“It's not really about Enumclaw,” Mudede said. “It's not about the city. It's just a place that this happened. The Internet was really the focus of this thing. We're focused on the Internet as the location of this.

“They came from all over, Portland, Seattle, even as far as Ireland,” he said.

“The story is much more about people than a specific place,” Devor said. “Also, we are bending over backwards to keep specific names out of the film, in accordance with the wishes of those directly and indirectly involved. Perhaps this anonymity will spill over to locations as well.”

The film will not name any of the principals in the incident, instead using their Internet handles, such as “misterhand” and “happyhorseman,” Mudede said.

“We realize this is a sensitive subject and wish to make a thoughtful, fair, and intellectually vigorous film,” Devor added. “We are open to hearing thoughts from all perspectives and acknowledge that making a documentary is always a learning process.”

Ultimately Devor said his goal for the film is to “look through the eyes of those who have different outlooks or consciousness than our own,” and added that he will use an impressionistic approach to visually represent this on film.

“In The Forest There Is Every Kind Of Bird,” is currently filming. Production is expected to finish by the end of summer with editing following in the fall. With luck, the film could debut at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. A commercial release is unlikely before summer of 2007

The man actually died but several hours after the incident. His name was Kenneth Pinyan, a 45 year old engineer. You can read about him on Wikipedia. The documentary movie "Zoo" from 2007 is depicting the events surrounding his death.

you all have it wrong, after extensive research, and a roommate from enumclaw (where this incident takes place) though it is the same man and same horse (bullseye) at the same place in enumclaw this is not his death, this is a video of it going correctly.... notice how there is no blood, if your anus was perforated by a 3 foot horse cock you would bleed, this video was also voluntarily released under the name mrhands by the actual man kenneth pinyan a boeing exec. i am terrified to see the actual death video as i cannot see how it could be worse, but alas it is police evidence and probably wont be released.

I dunno, i dont see how he could of survived that. That horse dick was about 3 feet long, and thicker than most people's arm, and he took the whole goddamn thing! That had to do some damage. As for there not being any blood, the dick was only in his ass all the way for 2 or 3 seconds then the horse pulled and blew all over him, so maybe there wasnt enough time to get any blood on his dork.
