19 year old Jim and Paul desperately wanted to escape their dead end jobs and gloomy existence in Leicester, England. But the adventure they craved would soon turn into their worst nightmare. Jim and Paul had been friends since school, socializing with the same group of lads in the same pubs and clubs, week in, week out. But one Thursday night in 1996, an old friend turned up at their nightclub who would change their lives forever. Jamie stuck out from the rest of the drab crowd - he was confident, tanned, and flashing a lot of cash. Jim and Paul were hooked on his stories of holidays abroad, cocktail parties and girls in bikinis. He told them they could live the dream too - and introduced them to a Russian guy sitting quietly in a corner of the club. He offered Jim and Paul £8000 each and a 4 star holiday with all the spending money they could want. All they had to do was bring back a package from Venezuela.

Oil and socialism are big exports in Venezuela, and Diego Buñuel steps into the heart of both in the capital city of Caracas. Diego stumbles across a socialist protest where tense relations with the U.S. over politics and oil are top of mind for participants. But while government-enforced low costs have made gas unbelievably cheap for Venezuelans - just a few cents per litre - regulations have caused massive food shortages. Diego sneaks over the Colombian border to investigate illegal gas smuggling. In the countryside of San Felipe, agrarian reform is putting land back into the hands of the people with former sugar cane workers kicking out their former bosses. With a machete and some VHS film tape, workers mark off their land, waiting for it to be recognised by the local mayor's office. High in the Venezuelan Andes, Diego follows two volunteers who bring a mobile library by mule to help families attending school in the mountains. In the Caracas slum of Antimano, Diego plays pick-up basketball, and visits an area where school is held in the streets.
