غطفان : قبيلة ضخمة عربية من قبائل الجاهلية وصدر الإسلام سكنوا بادية وادي القرى وبوادي المدينة المنورة وفدك وماجاورها.
وقد شاركت بطونها في مناصرة القرامطة (الحركة الباطنية التي غطت سيطرتها الأحساء ونجد والحجاز والشام) وبتهديدهم للفاطميين في مصر وصلوا لحالة صدام معهم
كعبة بني غطفان :
و من أشهر آلهتهم نذكر "العزى" و "اللات" , و حسب الرويات فإن أحد سادة غطفان كان قد بنى معبدا بوادي القرى حول بئر وسمي هذا المعبد بكعبة غطفان و يوجد بها حجر أبيض قيل أنه سقط من السماء, و كذلك صنم يسمى باللات, هدمت كعبة غطفان على يد "خالد بن الوليد"و لا يدر أحد مصير الحجر الأبيض , وربما عادت غطفان إلى عباداتها أيام حروب الردة بعد وفاة الرسول, و من المعروف أن جل قبائل "غطفان" قد ارتدت عن الإسلام أيام خلافة أبي بكر و طالبوا هذا الأخير بالإقتصار على الصلاة و امتنعوا عن دفع الزكاة, بل طالبوه بدفعها إليهم قائلين" بالأمس كانت لكم أما اليوم فهي لنا".
و في مصارد عديدة يذكر المؤرخون أخبار ارتداد جل القبائل العربية عن الإسلام بعد وفاة الرسول, وادعى بعضهم النبوة الذين ساندتهم بعض القبائل العربية و منهم "غطفان" فقاتلت المسلمين , فسار إليهم خالد بن الوليد في جيش من المسلمين و اشتد القتال بينهم.
