كان عمر بن الخطاب رغم ما اشتهر به من قسوة و خشونة، مولعا بالموسيقى و الغناء ولعا شديدا.. ويؤكد بعض المؤرخين أنه كان جميل الصوت إذا غنى و يروون عنه أنه غنى بهذا البيت من الشعر: و ما حملت من ناقة فوق رحلها * أبر وأوفى ذمة من محمد وصارعمر يلون في نغمات الغناء وينوع تلحينه حتى اجتمع حوله عدد كبير من الناس وهم ستزيدونه، وأراد عمر أن يختم هذه الجلسة الغنائية بتلاوة آيات من القرآن فتفرق الناس وذهبوا عنه.. وإذ ذاك صاح فيهم عمر: ثكلتكم أمهاتكم إذا أخذت في مزمار الشيطان اجتمعتم.. و إذا أخذت في كتاب الله تفرقتم.المصدر (حياة عمر بن الخطاب للبكري ص262 عن عمر بن الخطاب ص89-90.. ص92أدبنا الضاحك ص 176-177).
