أقنوم كلمة سريانية الأصل يقابلها في اليونانية كلمة هيبوستاسيس hypostasis وهي تتكون من مقطعين هيبو : تحت ، ستاسيس : كيان ، وهي تعني حرفيا تحت كيان … أي ما يقوم عليه الكيان الإلهي … وعلى ذلك فكلمة أقنوم تعني خاصية ذاتية في الله تقوم عليها الذات الإلهية وبدونها ينعدم قيامها .

أول أشخاص أستخدموا هذه الكلمة كانوا المفكرين المسيحيين الأوائل في القرون الأولى لمحاولة أيجاد لفظ يبسط فكرة التثليث المسيحي و يعبر عنها .

و لا يشترط وجود الكلمة صراحة أو أحد ( مشتقاتها ) في الكتاب المقدس لأنها محاولة لتبسيط و شرح عقيدة التثليث الواردة بكل وضوح بالكتاب المقدس .
