كانت الحيوانات المحرمة توصف بأنها نجسة ، ولكن الأسماك والطيور والحشرات والزواحف والحشرات الممنوعة والجثث الميتة كانت توصف أيضاً بأنها مكروهة (لاويين 2:11-47). فإن هذه الطيور والأسماك تشمل العديد من الأنواع التي تتغذى على الاشياء الميته، إذا أنها تقتات من الحيوانات الميتة ومن القمامة. وقد كانت الحيوانات التي تزحف على بطنها مثل الثعابين والديدان واليرقات والجرذان، والمخلوقات العديدة الأرجل مثل أم أربعة وأربعين والعناكب هي أيضا مكروهة وبغيضة. فهي تنشط في الظلام وتصور حقيقة الناس الذين يحبون الظلمة لأن أعمالهم شريرة (يوحنا 19:3).
