I think that Ruth Gledhill is just using a journalistic style presenting a controversy in the Catholic church representing the old and the new. We all practically know that the Catholic church is re-visiting the Bible applying modern methods of literary criticism that seek to employ literary genres, study of anthropolgy and culture, etc. It is also an established fact that the Catholic Church believes in the Bible's inspiration and even inerrancy as a doctrine while affirming all these methods of study. By and large, the Catholic church as well as the majority of evangelical churches advocate the separation of Church and State as they don't want the State to tell them how to administer their business but mind their own business. I personally believe that British media likes to exalt atheism as the best answer of all over any form of loyalty to Church or tradition, and they do that in reaction to the bad history of Church in the past.
