ويعد استخدام عبارة الدين الشعبي في مواجهة عبارة الدين الرسمي أو دين العلماء استخداما حديثا نسبيا، رغم أنها تسمى في الحقيقة ظاهرة قديمة مترسخة في مختلف التجارب الدينية التاريخية، بما فيها تجربة الإسلام حين نهض التمييز بين إسلام الخاصة وإسلام العامة، أو بين إسلام الفقهاء والعلماء وإسلام سائر الفئات الاجتماعية، مؤشرا على اختصاص كل ظرف بفهم مخصوص للدين وبأشكال متباينة تجلت من خلالها تجربة التدين.

ها هم هنا يطلقون بكل صراحة على "المفاهيم القديمة التي لنفسها صبغة إسلامية" "الإسلام" خطئًا، والصحيح هو "فهم العامة للإسلام". ولاحظ أنهم يقولون لك أن مثل هذه التعبيرات التي ترددها خلفهم، يقولون لك "استخداما حديثا نسبيا". إنها الحداثة والعولمة والرأسمالية التي لا تعرف الرحمة.
