يقول الكتاب في مقدمته التي كتبها د. عبد المجيد الشرفي:

"كثيرًا ما يجد الباحثون المعاصرون حرجًا في التصدي بروح نقدية لجوانب عديدة من منظومة العلوم الإسلامية الكلاسيكية، من تفسير وحديث وعلم كلام وفقه وأصول فقه. ذلك أن عناصرها متضافرة، يعضد بعضها بعضًا، ولذلك يخشى أن تنهار المنظومة برمتها إذا تبين الخلل في فرع من فروعها. فتراهم مترددين بين الإثبات والنفي، بين الجرأة والخوف، بين مقتضيات المعرفة الحديثة ومقتضيات الوفاء لجهود القدماء. وفي خضم هذا التردد يسود اللبس وتزداد الحيرة وتتفاقم المشكلة التي تعترض المؤمنين، فلا يجدون أجوبة شافية عن أسئلتهم المشروعة. إن الذين يكتبون في المواضيع الدينية فلا يجرؤن على إثارة ما يحرج منها معذورون إلى حد ما في تقصيرهم، فوطأة الواقع الذي فرضته الحداثة هو الذي أدَّاهم إلى البحث عن حلول جديدة، ولكن هيهات! فللمنهج النقدي التاريخي شروك صارمة، لا يؤهلهم تكوينهم في الأغلب للإستجابة لها، وهو منهج مرتبط بدوره بالمنهج السائد في العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية الحديثة." (ص 7)

ثم يقول:
"لم يكن بسام الجمل خالي الذهن من العقبات العديدة التي تعترض الباحث .... فواجه موضوعه بروح علمية عالية: جمع المادة المتوفرة وحللها واستقراها وأحصاها وقارن بين عناصرها ... وخرج من هذا العمل الجاد بنتائج إن لم تكن نهائية فهي أقرب إلى أن تكون نهائية.... (ص 9)
