أحمد الربعي في بداية حياته السياسية كان محسوب على اليسار القومي العربي في فترة الستينات وموائمة للجو السائد انذاك ولهيمنة الشعارات الناصرية القومية على الشارع العربي
وربما السبب الاساسي هو موقف عبد الناصر من قضية ضم الكويت للعراق ومعارضته للمطالب التي تقدمت بها حكومة عبد الكريم قاسم ووقوف حكومة عبد الناصر ضد الحكومة العراقية أنذاك وضد هذه المطالب هي التي خلقت صحوة قومية عربية كويتية ...

أما تحوله لليبرالية والتعددية و حسب مايراه الربعي فهو خيار لابد منه كان بعد ان دخلت امريكا الكويت
وانتزعتها من قبضة العراق
الاتجاه السياسي للربعي وغيره تحدده مصالح البلد .. ولكل وقت اذان
مرة يؤذن لعبد الناصر ومرة يؤذن لامريكا
