باختصار :
يرى البعض ان «العلمانية» هي مبدأ ينادي بفصل الدين عن الدولة، وعن التعليم العام، وتحويل الدين إلى شأن خاص بالفرد، وكفالة حق الأفراد في تغيير عقائدهم كيفما شاؤوا. وأن «العلمانية» تنطلق من رؤية إنسانية غير دينية للعالم ، تحرر الفرد من الخضوع لما هو غيبي ومطلق. لكن مفهوم " فصل الدين عن السياسة " هو المفهوم السائد للعلمانية عند العرب. فالعلمانية الآن تحاول أن تظهر أنها ليست منكرة لوجود مسلَّمات دينية بمعناها الشمولي. و الخطاب العلماني في منطقتنا العربية مساير للخطاب السياسي، وهو خطاب موجه في أساسه إلى عقلنة المجتمع فكرياً، واجتماعياً، وسياسياً. وكان هذا من أبرز الأسباب التي أدت إلى إثارة الخطاب الديني وحوَّلته إلى خطاب تصادمي مع الخطاب العلماني في المنطقة العربية، خاصة أن العلمانيين كانوا قد اتجهوا إلى وسيلة ما يسمى بـ «بنقد التراث من داخله» بقصد تفعيله في تجديد الفكر العربي، كما انصب على ما يُسَمّى «بفقه الواقع» من تلك المواد التراثية وعدم استصحاب «فقه النــص» بــل كانوا يحاكمون فقه النص. كما كانوا يقابلون بين الواقع بكل مدخلاته المحلية والخارجبة وبين التراث والنص اليقيني بصفة خاصة، تمهيداً لما يُسَمّى «بأنسنة الدين»؛ أي اعتباره إنسانياً منقطع الصلة بالله، وعد التراث جميعه من مقدس، وغير مقدس كمنتجَ من منتجات الخبرة الإنسانية.
