حج أبو الأسود الدؤلي ومعه امرأته وكانت جميلة. فبينا هي تطوف بالبيت إذ عرض لها عمر بن أبي ربيعة، فأتت أبا الأسود فأخبرته، فأتاه أبو الأسود فعاتبه. فقال له عمر: ما فعلت شيئا. فلما عادت إلى المسجد عاد فكلمها، فأخبرت أبا الأسود، فأتاه في المسجد وهو مع قوم جالس فقال له:
وإني ليثنيني عن الجهل والخنا وعن شتم أقوام خلائق أربع
حياء وإسلام وبقـيا وأنـنـي كريم ومثلي قد يضر وينفع
فشتان ما بيني وبينك إنـنـي على كل حال أستقيم وتظلع

فقال له عمر: لست أعود يا عم لكلامها بعد هذا اليوم. ثم عاود فكلمها، فأتت أبا الأسود فأخبرته، فجاء إليه فقال له:
أنت الفتى وابن الفتى وأخو الفتى وسيدنـا لـولا خـلائق أربـع
نكول عن الجلى وقرب من الخنا وبخل عن الجدوى وأنك تـبـع
ثم خرجت وخرج معها أبو الأسود مشتملا على سيف. فلما رآهما عمر أعرض عنها، فتمثل أبو الأسود:
تعدو الذئاب على من لا كلاب له وتتقي صولة المستأسد الحامـي

لقي عمر بن أبي ربيعة ليلى بنت الحارث بن عمرو البكرية وهي تسير على بغلة لها، وقد كان نسب بها، فقال: جعلني الله فداك عرجي ها هنا أسمعك بعض ما قلته فيك. قالت: أو قد فعلت? قال نعم فوقفت وقالت: هات. فأنشدها.
صوت

ألا يا ليل إن شفاء نفـسـي نوالك إن بخلت فنولـينـا
وقد حضر الرحيل وحان منا فراقك فانظري ما تأمرينا
فقالت: آمرك بتقوى الله وإيثار طاعته وترك ما أنت عليه. ثم صاحت ببغلتها ومضت
