هذه الترنيمة الرائعة التي لحنت بالحان ساحرة لها علاقة وثيقة بالغاء الرق في بريطانيا و معظم مستعمراتها
.الترنيمة كتبها تاجر الرقيق John Newton الذي تأثر بالوعظ الانجيلي و تاب ليصبح واعظا بدوره.
John Newton استطاع ان يستميل عضو البرلمان و السياسي المثالي William Wilberforce الذي تبنى الكفاح ضد الاتجار بالرقيق الى ان تم اقرار القانون سنة 1807 كما واصل كفاحه الى ان اقر قانون تحريم امتلاك العبيد قبل ثلاثة ايام من وفاته سنة 1833
