is a barrier method of contraception which also offers considerable protection against the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, when used consistently for any sexual intercourse and genital contact on every occasion. If used with spermicides its effectiveness can be increased.
Download a poster promoting female condoms and showing correct insertion, removal and disposal.
Advantages
1. It is a barrier to infection when used carefully and consistently at all genital contact.
2. It can be inserted into the vagina before intercourse, even before the man has an erection so timing is not as critical as with the male condom.
3. It can be used with water and oil based lubricants because it is not made of rubber
4. Carefully positioned it can stimulate the woman's clitoris, enhancing orgasm.
5. It does not have to be removed as soon as the man's penis has gone soft.
Using The Female Condom
Remove any sharp jewellery, protect from sharp or rough finger nails - to prevent tearing.
Open the packet carefully tearing down from the notch.
Remove the condom from the packet.
The female condom is pre-lubricated. It has a loose flexible inner ring inside the closed end of the female condom.
Squeeze the inner ring inside the female condom between your thumb, index and middle fingers to make it easier to insert.
With the other hand, spread the labia or lips of the vulva around the vaginal opening.
Insert the flattened ring which is still inside the female condom, into the vagina and push inside as far as possible.
Then put your finger inside the female condom until you can feel the bottom of the inner ring. and push the ring up into the vagina until it is beyond the pubic bone. If you curve your finger forwards inside the vagina the pubic bone can be felt as a very hard structure.
The outer ring and part of the condom will remain outside the vagina, offering some protection from infection to the covered parts of thevulva.
N.B. Some women report that the position of this outer ring on the clitoris enhances the pleasure of orgasm.
Because using the female condom does not require the man's penis to become hard, the female condom can be inserted at any time before any close genital contact.
When ready for sexual intercourse, the man's penis needs to be guided into the condom. One cause of female condom failure is "missing" the condom and inserting the penis outside along side it (in this case, on ejaculation all the seminal fluid is then deposited inside the vagina not inside the female condom - potential risk of infection and pregnancy).
During lovemaking it is quite normal for the female condom to move slightly. This will not reduce your protection because the penis is still covered, and the semen will stay inside.
Lubrication
Extra lubrication to the inside of the condom with any of the lubricants available on the market is sometimes needed to stop too much movement - the female condom is not damaged by oil based lubricants because it is not made from latex.
If the outer ring is pulled into the vagina, or if the penis starts to enter the vagina outside the condom, the man should to withdraw his penis and add extra lubricant into the inside of the condom so the penis slides inside the condom without causing it to move.
Removing the Female Condom
Because the female condom lines the inside of the vagina, the man doesn't have to withdraw his penis immediately after ejaculating. The female condom can be removed when it suits, making sure that no semen spills or comes into contact with the vagina. To stop semen from running out, the female condom requires twisting at the outer end prior to pulling it out gently. A new female condom should be used for each time you have close genital contact or sexual intercourse.
To dispose of it, wrap the used Female Condom inside its packet and throw it into a bin. As with the male latex condom, the female condom should not be flushed down the toilet because it is not biodegradable.
Gay sex with a female condom
Some gay men use the female condom for anal intercourse with or without the inner ring, in preference to the tighter fit of a male condom. However as yet there is no empirical research to show exactly how effective the female condom is in preventing the spread of infections via anal intercourse, so it is mentioned here with that reservation.
