London - A cellphone call a day can keep the babies at bay...

A British consumer organisation welcomed the warning on Tuesday, encouraging men to spend less time on their cellphones because it affects the quality of their sperm.

It was found that men who speak or send messages for four or more hours a day on their cellphones have a greater tendency to produce sperm of poorer quality.

The use of cellphones reduces the sperm's ability to swim and can make the sperm cell deviate from the norm.

Cellphones can also lower the number of sperm cells available for conception.

British consumer organisation Powerwatch said in a statement it is good to warn men, especially because they attach their cellphones to their belts.

The cellphones radiate electromagnetic rays to the testicles, where sperm is stored.

The study was done by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. The researchers studied men in fertility clinics in New Orleans, Mumbai and Cleveland.

The men who used a cellphone for more than four hours a day had a sperm count 25% lower than those who did not use cellphones. They also produced the poorest quality sperm.
