Conspiracy Theories as Explained by a Psychiatrist

The other day, I was in a conversation with a psychiatrist. The subject of conspiracy theories came up, and so I asked, 'what is it with people and conspiracy theories, anyway?' Here, basically, is what he said. It isn't word for word what he said (eidetic I ain't), but it's within the spirit of what he had to say. Not sure if other psyches support this theory or not, but it's food for thought. Certainly, it's plausible to me.

Real life is messy, confused and complicated. Take the United States government, for example.* Why did they think the Vietnam War was a good idea? Why would any sane country try to turn agrarian economies into oil economies and, when they fail again and again, continue to throw debt at the problem like birds butting a window? Why was Iraq such a cluster-fuck on so many levels? How could the most defended country let something like 911 happen?

The problem is, the United States is not run by a group of people with far-reaching plans with a definite vision for the future who works in concert at maximum efficiency. It's actually run by a bunch of fuck-ups.** Half the time, the people who are in charge have no idea what they are doing, they are merely technocrats - people who rule for the sake of ruling.

The idea that the world is such a chaotic, messy place is frightening for conspiracy theorists. One merely needs to have the skills to decode it.

Essentially, it is a type of immaturity. The conspiracy theorist isn't sophisticated enough to say to themselves, 'life is like being in a pinball machine and all you can really do is hang on and hope for the best'. Instead they have to create a system (or flock to a created system) where everything really is planned. A giant building collapsing after being hit by one plane is frightening. A complex network of events that lead to that building being rigged with explosives as part of some nefarious plan is reassuring. The idea that cameras can track one plane into a building, but only glimpses of others is confusing. Creating a scenario where agents who never fail confiscate every camera to cover up evil deeds makes sense - even if only in the internal world of the conspiracy theorist.

Basically what conspiracy theorists have to come to grips with is this simple fact: Life is a shit fight. Sometimes things don't make sense. You won't always get the answers to everything. Some things will appear to be within reach of being solved, but will always managing to slip out of our grasp like quicksilver. This is not to say we should not always try to seek answers. It means that we should not resort to fabricating reality when we can't put the pieces together into a picture that we can easily understand.
