وقد أثارت "معن مصرن" "معين مصران"، جدلاً شديداً بين العلماء، ولا سيما علماء التوراة، فذهب بعضهم إلى أن "مصر" "مصرايم" Mizraim الواردة في التوراة ليست مصر المعروفة التي يرويها نهر النيل، بل أٌريد بها "معين مصران"، وهو موضع تمثله "معان" في الأردن في الزمن الحاضر. وان لفظة "برعو" Per'o التي ترد في التوراة أيضاً لقباً لملوك مصر، والتي تقابلها لفظة "فرعون" في عربيتنا، لا يراد بها فراعنة مصر، بل حكام "معين مصران"، وان عبارة "هاكرهم مصريت" Hagar Ham-Misrith، بمعنى "هاجر المصرية"، لا تعني "هاجر" من مصر المعروفة، بل من مصر العربية، أي من هذه المقاطعة التي نتحدث عنها "معن مصرن" وان القصص الوارد في التوراة عن "مصر" وعن "فرعون"، هو قصص يخص هذه المقاطعة العربية، وملكها العربي.
وقالت هذه الجمهرة: إن ما ورد في النصوص الآشورية من ذكر ل Musri لا يعني أيضاً مصر المعروفة، بل مصر العربية، وأن ما جاء في نص "تغلاتبلسر الثالث" الذي يعود عهده إلى حوالي سنة "734" قبل الميلاد، من أنه عين عربياً Arubu واسمه "ادبئيل" "ادب ال" "ادب ايل" "Idiba'il" حاكماً على "مصري" "Musri"، لا يعني أنه عينه حاكماً على "مصر" الإفريقية المعروفة، بل على هذه المقاطعة العربية التي تقع شمال "نخل مصري" أي "وادي مصري". ويرى "وينكر"، أن "سبعة" "Sib'e" الذي عينه "تغلاتبلسر" سنة "725 ق. م." على مصري، والذي عينه "سرجون" قائداً على هذه المقاطعة، إنما عين على أرض "مصر" العربية ولم يعين على "مصر" الإفريقية.
وقد ورد في أخبار "سرجون" أن من جملة من دفع الجزية إليه "برعو" Pir'u وقد نعت في نص "سرجون" ب "برعو" شاروت مصري"، أي "برعو ملك أرض مصري". وورد ذكر "برعو" هذا في ثورة "أسدود" التي قامت سنة "711 ق. م.". وورد ذكر "مصري" في أخبار "سنحريب" ملك آشور، وكان ملك "مصري" وملك "ملوخة" قد قامة بمساعدة اليهود ضد "سنحريب"، و ذلك في عام "700 ق. م."، وقد انتصر "سنحريب". ويرى "ونكلر" أن كل. ما ورد في النصوص الآشورية عن "مصري" مثل: "شراني مت مصري" "Sharrani Mat Musri"، أي "ملوك أرض مصر" إنما قصد به هذه المقاطعة العربية.
